Are you facing a potential long distance move for a new job? Relocating is exciting. But this transition can also bring a great deal of stress. To help you make a sound decision about your future, consider the seven points, below.

If in a Relationship, Consider Your Partner’s Needs, Too…

Being single gives you great flexibility in making career decisions, such as when it comes to relocating for a job. But if you have a partner or children, the move will affect their lives, too.

Talk to your partner about their thoughts on your opportunity. If your children are old enough, consider discussing the possibility with them, too. The last thing you want is to cause anxiety or undue stress on anyone. With some careful planning and consideration, your decision does not have to feel jarring. You can get the whole family on board.

Before Relocating for a New Job, Look Closely at the Company’s Viability…

Before relocating for a move, consider the hiring company’s viability. Will this company still be around in five years or more? If you can get access to recent years’ growth details, such as from annual reports, is this growth showing a positive curve? Can they afford to pay you what you deserve and need to maintain a positive lifestyle? Never go to extra hassle or expense for an unstable company, unless your retention relates to turning their business around.

Consider the New Location’s Cost of Living…

Getting a new job or being promoted as part of relocating often means a higher salary. But is that salary really an improvement, when considering your new location’s cost of living? Do some research into the local area and how much you will spend on groceries, rent, utilities, parking, transportation, insurance and other costs after relocating. Do they fit the new income?

Remember that Relocating is Stressful…

Before deciding upon relocating, think about all that moving involves. You need to find a new place to live. Either you must find a place and secure it before making the move, or live in a hotel for a period of time while you search. If you have pets, they need a pet-friendly place to stay during the move, too.

You should never search for a place to live when desperate. Doing so opens you up to housing scams. Only use quality websites featuring rental listings, especially since applying for a place to live involves so much personal information. Talk to your company about temporary corporate housing, such as for a three- to six-month term as part of your relocating package. Many companies prove open to providing this type of assistance and that is why corporate housing exists, anyway.

Acquaint Yourself with One or More New Coworkers…

If you can get to know one or more of your new coworkers before relocating, you have them as a resource for your move. You can ask them about popular neighborhoods, company expectations, the local social scene and other details. If you cannot access someone in the company, you can explore Reddit chat threads and other online communities to get information about your new city.

Never Relocate Without Paying Your New Community a Visit First…

Simply doing online research about your new community is not enough. Before making a decision about relocating, ask for a trip provided by your employer to see the community and company’s work environment.

Another option is to plan a trip on your own and spend several days really exploring the area. Sometimes people do not feel like they fit within a particularly geography and that could be the case for you. Or, you may fall in love and grow more excited about your pending move. If you have a reluctant spouse, partner or children, a visit can help them grow excited about the change, too.
